Jimbob, assuming you have the original mk15 Villiers and having spent nearly a week trying to get mine running, hence the "Its alive" post further down this list:

1. Ensure the valve and ignition timing are bang on, I ditched the points for an ignition module (£5 e-bay), to set up just line up the flywheel timing marks with the pot at TDC.

2. Ensure plug is clean and gapped 18-25 thou.

3. Open throttle 1/4 inch at lever, pull the engine over a couple of times with choke open, remove plug and check, is it?
    a. wet with fuel.
    b. bone dry.

4. If a. then remove the carb top and screw the throttle needle down half a turn reassemble, dry and replace plug start at 3 again.

5. If b. remove the carb top and screw the throttle needle out half a turn reassemble, replace plug start at 3 again.

Eventually mine leapt into life. If it fires up and produces black smoke then it is running rich and the needle needs to go down a fraction more. If it is white you are possibly burning oil.
Try a compression test which will give an idea of the state of the rings and valves.

PM me, I have a PDF of the MK15 manual but it is no help with the carb set up (different carb) I also have the original paper monrotiller hand book and monrotility the guide to mechanised gardening which I can scan and post on the manuals section of this site.

Good luck, if I can help just shout, it can be really frustrating but once it goes and you get to use it, it all seems worth it, dug half my plot and planted my spuds with mine yesterday.

Regards
Andy
