Found some very old bottles of Tumblebug - heptenophos and permethrin
1) are they now illegal ?
2) if yes, how do I safely dispose of them?

Very old indeed!
heptenophos was withdrawn in 2001, and permethrin banned in 2003 :lol:
Our Council says to take them to the local waste and recycling centre.

Isn't permethrin still available as ant powder? Is it only banned on crops?
I can't quite believe what's managed to accumulate in at the back of my shed. Garage next. :ohmy:

Chocolate covered - they are a "must experience" (even if only the once!!) :lol:

Personally I don't care very much they are banned or not.
What would concern me is the age of the product, not all chemicals are stable.
If the ingredients degrade, then something harmfull may result and the plants you are trying to protect might even die.
If you want to use them then you might want to do a little research online.
I would probably try them on some weeds first. :)

True. If anything should go drastically wrong - illness or harmful results - it would be impossible to point the finger at the manufacturer / supplier.
"Our" knowledge of how chemicals behave and their influence on us grows... although sometimes we might argue that it's overly bureaucratic influences from the EEC I still wouldn't take the chance.

I did a search on these.
Tumblebug, active ingredient Dimethoate. Toxic to Bees so Don't use it.
Permethrin, still in use to kill fleas but VERY toxic to cats, if you have pets then it is probably not a good idea.
Heptenophos, is an organophosphate I couldnt find out much but I am sure that they are absorbed through the skin or something and considered bad.
On balance I recommend you dispose of them at your nearest recycling centre (the council tip)

Hi Lawrence, my Tumblebug has heptenophos not dimethoate but don't intend to use it in any case.
