Cicken with scaley leg
« on: August 08, 2008, 10:18 »
Hi.. I have a chook with what looks like scaley leg..  I've read about dipping the legs in surgical spirit and also about the vaseline... Would it harm the bird to do both (double whammy)? Surgical spirit first and then vaseline? or would the vaseline prevent the surgical spirit from evaporating and cause irritation?

Vaseline really is very effective you know. Just smother it all over the legs and crusty areas and within a day you will see the difference. Personally I wouldnt bother with the spirit
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

I thought my silkies had it when we had them so i took them to the vets and it turned out o be something that chickens dont normally have it well the vet said he had never seen it in chickens and that only normally dogs so he gave us some medican and they were better in about 2/3 weeks !!

So i think it maybe best to go to the vet and make sure it is Scaly Might !!

I use Benzyl Benzoate which you can buy from your local chemist and its a tratment for Scabies.

I pour some into a jar and use a 1" paint brush and slap it on once a week for three weeks.

I never use S.spirt anymore as it really stings if there are any little openings.

Imagine if you had lifted some skin on your finger and dunked it in SS you would be airborn!

Personally I would try the Vaseline and then if it disappeared all well and good and if not, then make a trip to the vet

The vets could be expensive, I too recently had scaly leg mite, and after reading one or two items, went to my local pharmacy and bought some Benzil Benzoate (scabies treatment) for £2.50, one dose got rid of the lot. It was easy to apply, and the chooks were not stressed or uncomfortable at all. I would reccomend that Abscorbil I think was the trade name.
