Anya and Rooster potatoes - any good?
« on: November 15, 2015, 11:58 »
My OH is thinking of trying these next year to get a mix of early and main crop ones. Anyone got any recommendations re- taste, use, and if the later Roosters can survive slug damage?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Been growing Roosters for many years.
They make great mash, boiled, chips and great roasties.
Having some that are stored in shed today for roast. They store well and am usually eating them in April from picking in aug/sep.

They do produce an abundant crop say of spuds about 3-4 inches and occasionally a larger few. Rarely get any smaller ones, which is good.
Not found them to have any slug damage.
But I've been growing my own nematodes for a number of years now and add that before I put the seed potatoes in. rarely have spoilt spuds and this year had none.
They do come early, so tend to be the first lot I eat, before my usual Maris and Desiree and other varities I occasionally grow.

The fact that you use nematodes does not help when making an assessment regarding a variety's slug resistance. I grew Rooster once and found they were decimated by slugs. Never again.

This newsletter (and other sites if you Google) also states that Rooster does not have good slug resistance.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi,

Grow Rooster every year, but only for roasters and chips(for the kids) they go to mush when boiled with us!
Very little slug damage!

Anya, only grew once, total waste of space with me!

Regarding slug damage and potatoes, we used to get loads of stable manure delivered to our plots, more than we could use, for free by a local stable but not any more!
Have to use home made compost from two large compost bins, though it is hard to fill them now without the manure!

On the land I was going to grow the spuds  I put the manure on by barrow loads, the potatoes used to get a lot of slug damage, but since it is no longer available there is almost no slug damage now!

The soil is now in very good condition, but i do scatter lots of slug pellets to keep the pests down somewhat!

It would appear in my case it was the manure that was encouraging the slugs!
STOP, and smell the roses!

Perhaps the dry summer helped but I found the year I grew them they had very little slug damage and I was impressed with the yield.

Anya - lovely as a boiled potato though I don't remember mashing or making chips).  I'd grow them again (not the biggest potato but again, a good yield)

Anya produced a huge crop that kept well throughout the winter.  Good for roasting in olive oil and with rosemary with their jackets left on.

A friend grows Anya in large pots, something like 20 to 22 inches across with a mix of half and half compost and manure. Think they put 4 per pot in.

The crops are good and easy to get at, they simply go out and dig around with their hands, alternatively you could empty a pot at a time. At the end the growing mix gets added to their raised bed.
