Too wet to plant Garlic?
« on: November 05, 2015, 11:11 »
Probably a silly question, but i wanted to get the Garlic in this weekend, but the weather forecast is rain, rain and just for good measure a little more rain.Theyll be going into a raised bed in fairly sandy free draining soil, reckon theyll be ok?
. . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . . .

I don't see why not, especially as your soil is free-draining.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Depending on how long a row you're planning, can you pop some sort of cloche over them?

Our garlic went in a week or so ago, and despite the wet weather, they're romping away, so you should be OK, especially as it's quite mild at the moment!

I found some garlic growing from last from back in the summer that I had overlooked so split it up and replanted and it is doing fine.

A belated thanks to the replies on this... put about sixty in on the 5th, so they`ve been in fourteen days, went down today and noticed a few just breaking the surface.Think any benifit from fleecing to encourage the rest considering the recent plummeting temps in my neck of the woods?

You could put a fleece over them, but they won't just 'give up' if it gets colder.

Next time you go down there, you'll certainly see some more showing!

The cold doesn't seem to bother garlic at all and it helps them to split into cloves.  If they don't get the cold weather, you can just get one big bulb of garlic like a mini onion.

I've had this before.  The garlic is still usable, so it not the end of the world, but its not quite what you wanted  ::)

I covered my intended garlic plot with plastic for a couple of weeks. Planted the garlic this weekend, the soil was in reasonable condition despite the rain.
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.

Garlic bulbs form all sorts of size 'pieces', and we have about forty or so which were right in the centre, next to the stem. They're tiny - about the thickness of a pencil!

I think the best thing to do with these, is to pop them into modules, and either use them whole when they eventually start to grow, rather like a spring onion, or better still, use the leaves as garlic chives!

Garlic is very hardy. It needs a cold spell to help it split into bulbs, so frost and snow will not be a problem. Only problem  that can check its growth is waterlogged /non-draining soil. Add some sand and grit if not free draining. So plant away!
