Spring onions
« on: September 28, 2009, 23:23 »
Can anyone give tips on growing spring onions, only managed to produce about a dozen this year, so next will have another go.  :)
I'm queen of my own compost heap and I'm getting used to the smell.

Sow a pinch into modules.

Leave them until they are about 6 inches tall and a couple of mm wide.

Transplant module by module in to final positions [don't split them]

Harvest module by module

Sow once a month between december and about July and you should have spring onions all year.

Sow "white lisbon - winter hardy" now and you will have spring onions in March/April.

Do you think it would be of any benefit if I grew some in modules and then planted them out under a polythene cloche?
Never keep your wish-bone where your back-bone ought to be.

I sowed two seed trays full last Nov and had spring onions all summer. I left them in a plastic greenhouse over winter.

They'll only really need the cloche when the weather is really bad, keep the cloche off otherwise or you'll be fighting fungal diseases... Ishikura overwinters quite well...

Thanks for that tip zazen. I have never had any success with spring onions, so I will try that.

Module grown - pics at planting out and at harvest. These were originally sown into jiffy 7s and planted out with no root disturbance.

I also grow them in side pots outside the kitchen door for quick winter grabs
