Tumbling toms - pinching out?
« on: May 24, 2009, 21:02 »
It's the first time I've grown these and I've got them in a hanging basket out the back but my question is - do I pinch them out like normal toms?

No, leave them alone, they are a determinate, (bush), variety.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

When I said pinching out, I should have said the side shoots - does the same apply?

No, do not pinch out the side shoots - they are a Bush Tomato ("Determinate") - i.e. they need to grow like a bush, not as a single stem

Bush grow into, well, a bush  :nowink: quite quickly with flower buds on the side branches and there is no obvious leader shoot. They are not usually very tall as they sprawl about. That is why they are sometimes grown in hanging baskets  :)

Indeterminates (cordon) grow up nice and tidy with side shoots in the leaf axils that it's best to pinch out.

All mine planted/potted on etc at the same time and bush toms are about 20 ins across and 10 ins tall and cordons are nearly three feet tall and upright, supported by strings.

Hope this helps  :)
