keeping run sweet
« on: October 05, 2010, 13:28 »
Hi, Over the weekend moved the chickens near to the house for the winter, being their first move I did not realize just how long it would take and not being able to do the lifting myself enlisted help from the family, not wanting to be a pain in the proverbial by keep asking for a move of coop etc. what is the best way to keep the run sweet smelling and hygienic for them during the winter months, and seeing it is near the house I don't want to smell pong whenever I go out the back door. Looking forward to your replies.

over winter a lot of people use Stalosan F in their coops and runs  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Main bit of advice is to cover your run. If it doesn't get wet it doesn't smell pretty much at all. This was something it learnt when we moved house. They now have a permanent run covered in corrugated plastic sheet. I have bark chippings down and with the odd poopa scoop they have been down for 2 months now, compared to a couple of weeks without the roof on.

What is Stalosen F?????
Am I right in assuming that the run is roofed (as in completely covered over on top) or just the area above the coop?

The run that is attached to the coop is covered, but that is only small so I made a larger one that is not covered so perhaps I should think about covering it, also it will keep them dry and out of winds.  Heard we are going to have another hard winter with lots of snow possibly more snow than last year, we shall see.
