I'm sure you'll get more advice on this but I'd say that was OK if you put some straw in for them and don't leave too much room for them to move about.

Also (and I'm sure you would do this anyway) if you make sure the box is secured well using something like bunji straps it would stop the box from sliding.

Maybe take a break half way there and check on them.  They'll just look at you with their heads cocked and beady eyes but at least you'll know that they are OK.

Good luck with the move!  :D

Have all movement restrictions been lifted by Defra then?

Hi Hermon, when I started to think about people buying my POL's, I looked into the box thingy, and apparently, just digging holes in a box is not good enough.  The article said near the top of the box, cut oblongs about 1inch deep by 2 inches long at several places on each side of the box.  put straw in the bottom and pack them in comfortably.  don't worry about leaving room for movement or drink.  I sometimes drop a little corn in, but they will lay down and go to sleep in the dark, but they must have their ventilation.  Don't worry, they'll be fine!!!!

If we ever have to take our chickens anywhere we use a cat carrier - one of the rigid plastic ones. You can get them for about £10 - £15 in pet stores. You can fit two or three birds in depending on size. This would be easier to carry and won't get squashed like a cardboard box might.

I think poultry movement is fine from surrey to Wales WG.  Although I'm not too sure about East Anglia, although I do know Zone 3 has been taken off as my brother lives at Newmarket

I always use cat boxes too. Plenty of ventilation and yet easy to carry. Someone could probably lend you one if you didn't want to buy one
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

DEFRA has lifted all movement control bans as of today so you are fine.

Have a good move and be happy in your new home
