No-shell egg
« on: May 14, 2011, 19:58 »
Ok, so when I said we'd been getting on fine, I was then gently reminded about our shell-less eggs.....

Two eggs this week, laid in the run (not the nest box, which is very much an exception to our norm), but with only a thick membrane on - no shell to speak of at all.

Havent changed anything we do to our knowledge.....

Any ideas? Thanks!!

Hens sometimes lay softies.  My silkie was very down in the beak until she laid a softie then she was fine.  It seems to make the hens feel under the weather.  They should go back to business as usual.

Do you know which hen is laying the softies?  It may be worth checking her vent.  You need to make sure that none burst inside her.  This can cause egg-yolk peritontitis which has a poor prognosis.  The other thing you could try is to sit the hen in a warm bath.  They relax and this can help them with any laying.

I am not that experienced and I'm sure someone more experienced will be along to give you more advice

In the meantime good luck and keep us posted  :)
