Raised bed orientation
« on: March 08, 2010, 16:59 »
I've just taken on an extra quarter plot, making me the proud owner of a half plot in total. I want to stick a few raised beds on this area as drainage is a little poor and find them easier to maintain. These will be rectangular, and wondered if I should put them in running north-south or east west to maximise production??

I think north south is supposed to be best, but I don't really believe it makes much difference :)

Mine are N-S purely on the basis that if they have a tall crop the beds on both sides get light - both because of Morning/Evening light being on either side of the tall crop, but also because the paths take up some of the shade the tall crop casts. But I haven't actually measured the shade cast ...
