can I compost plants with powdery mildew?
« on: September 18, 2010, 21:16 »
I usually get a bit of mildew, usually courgettes and sugarsnap peas are the worst and I put up with it because it doesn't seem to affect fruiting....in fact my courgettes seem to have got over it now and have lots of fresh shiny leaves.
This year it was on the cucumbers, strawberries and squash as well and I assume it was the long dry spell that caused it?
As it is an air-borne spore I could see it's progress round the garden.
My question is.....is mildew like blight and the leaves should not be composted?
I've put loads in already but my daleks get pretty hot with all the chicken poo so will the mildew spores die off?

I always have composted them but not sure if that's actually the best thing to do  ::) :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

And yet this year I've had far less mildew on my courgettes than I normally get. Hardly any at all, really, just very slight traces on a couple of leaves, whereas last year this time they were smothered in it. No sign at all on the cukes, strawberries or anything else. Odd, isn't it.

I think I've got a screw loose!
Pulled a couple of mildewed strawbs off today (shame...they were biggies :() and chucked them on the ground (as you do if you're mad) and there were mini explosions of grey spores when they landed.
That surely means I've spread it!!! Doh!!
Does it die off in the Winter or will it live in the soil?
