Butternut Squash - yet again

Right... this year I have had some success yippie I screamed.. until I had 1 in a risotto at the weekend. It had no real flavour/sweetness even after being oven roasted for 45 mins like I do to the tesco ones. Is this due to lack of sun or just the type I was growing?

I had one of my friends home grown BNS tasted so bland it was sickening, apparently its the lack of sun.

Just hoping my pumpkins taste okay, i got no BNS this year not happy.
Who needs a guard-dog when you can have cats for guards!

Unripe is ... revolting.

On the other hand I find most butternut I've tried behind the flavour of a good pumpkin.

This is now my second year of trying to grow butternut squash and I too cannot get them to ripen in time. Last year I grew from an unknown/forgotten imported stock of seed that produced green pear-sized fruits at the end of the season and which rotted with the first frosts.

This year I grew 'Waltham Butternut', from the Real Seed Catalogue, which is promoted as an early variety: http://www.realseeds.co.uk/wintersquash.html They were very slow to ‘take off’, whereas my hubbards and gems grew like rockets. Sure, I’ve got a crop this year, but they are going to be green and tasteless.

Next year I’m going to try Harrier F1 from Tozer: http://www.tozerseedsdirect.com/seeds/C185-squashbutternut.php as they claim it to be the ‘earliest maturing variety available’. If they come to nothing then I’m giving up on butternut, which is a real shame because I like them so much.

If anyone has any tips on getting a good, ripe, tasty crop then please share your secrets.
