Silly Painful Accident
« on: April 14, 2023, 10:52 »
I split a few logs down into thinner sections to get the fire going with my hydraulic log splitter last night. All went well until one got stuck on the static blade. Now the splitter itself is pretty safe. It needs two hands to press the button and hold the lever down so you'd need to be inventive to get your hand in the way.
Sometimes a log splits with a bang and jumps off the machine, so you learn to keep your feet out of the way.

Anyway, grabbed the stuck log off the blade and pulled it clear, thinking to just finish the split by pulling it apart. It came off the blade easily enough and then the wood snapped shut on me, trapping a finger. Think grabbing a finger in some pliers and squeezing.

Couldn't get the blessed thing to open enough to get my finger out so grabbed a crowbar - pretty tricky operating it one handed and no joy. Ran into the house and Val and I pulling couldn't get it open but eventually she managed to lever it a bit with crowbar and I was free.

It throbbed for the evening and looked angry but Ibuprofen gel and some bruise cream soothed things. Amazingly it looks normal this morning - I thought it would be very bruised.

Won't make that mistake again. Don't underestimate the power of wood.

Ouch, hope no ill effects
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Apart from some slight tenderness, it seems fine. Not an experience to repeat though.

Sometimes the silliest and simplest of things cause us a lot of pain and then the next day it's 'disappeared' . Been there and done that several times.

I've had it for over ten years but this is the first accident as such. I never thought about the split in the wood springing closed like that.
It hurt like anything but doesn't seem to have done any real damage. I've lived and learned :)

It'll be in the last place you thought of looking John, so try that first!  ::)  ;)

Glad to hear the damage was minor - could have been much worse.

Hello saw some blue air rising over in Wales the other day (I'm in Yorkshire) bet that's what it was ,you have my sympathy I've trapped my fingers cutting kindling trying to pull knotty wood apart ,have you tried the new log splitter, the speed has been slowed down has a cage type guard over th whole machine with 4 safety switches, theres a button to press on each end and 2 levers on one end main problem is not enough hands to operate them   jezza
