What can I plant under a bean wigwam?
« on: June 16, 2011, 09:08 »
I got given 6 runner bean plants so have done a wigwam and was wondering if I can plant anything in the middle of it, maybe lettuce leaf or a few raddish, as we don't need many of these?

Any thoughts?

Cheers

One they leaf up, not a lot will grow under it as it's enclosed on all sides. You could try something that would grow out of it, such as a pumpkin!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ok ta I wasn't sure if something like raddish would grow quicker than the beans while there was still light getting through?

You may get away with that, but I stop sowing radish at this time of year as I find they don't like the warmer, drier weather.

Lettuce enjoy the shade. Either leaf or hearting.

Monty Don was planting a courgette under his wigwam.

Lettuce will do fine while the beans are young but Monty Don's courgette under a wigwam wll be lost from site when the beans grow.

I have grown them under the front edge of my Munty frame though.

Hmm... yesterday I put half a row of Hollywood lettuce (small iceberg) and half a row of spinach under my bean row. Wonder what will happen

i usually plonk a couple of broad beans under my pea tents, the only climbers i've tried have been borlotti beans, and they refused to climb! probably the climate, i think they want to keep their heads down.
is pottering about a vocation?

We've put courgette's under ours
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

Not a veg I know but I stick a few sweet peas under the runner beans and just let them climb up and flower. They make a nice combined show.
