Staking Brassicas
« on: July 14, 2021, 15:31 »
My PSB, sprouts and romanescu all have huge bends in them by harvest. I tried to prop them up last year but the pants so huge and heavy.

WHat can I source or by to stake with? Any suggestions? Im in it for the long haul so something resuleable would be ideal!

Good evening Benny130,  the longer you leave staking the worse the bends will become.  It's best that you find some substantial stakes, 4"x2" wood, galvanised water pipe or black pipe.  Secure the beasties to the stakes and gently (very gently) tighten the veggies up to the stakes tightening up the ropes as the veggies start to adjust.  Bast wishes.  ;) Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I grow the sprout Sanda from Real Seeds which gets to around 5'!! Windy site so I use wooden stakes and tie in with old tights or pop socks which don't cut in to the stems so much.

Hi Benny

Iron reinforcing bar (rebar), of the type sold for concrete reinforcing, can be cut to lengths that you want, and is inexpensive and re-usable.  Making cuts at an angle makes the rebar even easier to drive into the ground, but not totally necessary.  It is reasonably easy to cut with a hacksaw, but an electric reciprocating saw with a blade for metal makes the job easier.
