DIY Bluebird box

Here's a very thorough video instruction on making bluebird boxes. I believe you have this bird in the UK. It's time to make them now so they're ready for the first arrivals soon. I can't afford the cedar myself so will use spruce and put some outside protective sealant on it.

Tits....

Blue tits. That's what they're called here!
I like the screen wire idea, for the young. I was thinking of making one up shortly, so I may include that. Thanks.

Tits....

Blue tits. That's what they're called here!

I'm not so sure our tits are the same as 'Bluebirds' so hope the nest-box entrance hole is a suitable size.  I think I'll have a go at making one too and put it down on the plot where there are fewer moggies roaming about.

Great videos and plans. :)

You're correct Learner. We don't have Bluebirds  :( LINK

But they are apparently part of the thrush family, so we've got our own, less colourful cousins. :)

Thanks for the info, Rob but I am not sure I want someones cousin nesting in my box 'specially if they're not pretty.

It's blue or nothing so I'm sticking to a small hole ....Blue tits only! 8)

Do thrushes nest in boxes? I've never heard of it. You're more likely to have tits nesting elsewhere in your garden if you put one up. They come and check out the bird box - and then go and nest somewhere stupid right by it!

Tits in the garden are a disaster! :(

A pair nested year before last in the garden in a box with half-open front. It looked as if they'd made a good choice - stuck high up in the middle of a pyracantha....

But..... one chick drowned in the pond on the other side of the garden, one didn't make it out of the nest and another was met by the neighbour's cat.

I plan on sticking a nest box on the lottie as there's more chance of survival there than in my garden.

we had a family of blue tits nest in our bat box one year.  twas very comical watching the parents sqeeeeeezing themselves in and out of the entrance slit.

we do also have a proper blue tit box, but that was already occupied.

Am I the only one with a copy of Super Simple Birdhouses you can make by Charles R. Self ISBN 0-8069-0858-0? - Published by Sterling Publishing in the U.S. & Canada?

With instructions for bluebird (or wren) birdhouse on page 53? (also suggests may be suitable for nuthatches, titmice & chickadees).

Only seen wrens nesting in my garden however, in a purpose built box/ with partial wall cavity behind (constructed when bricking up a door opening by our dining room window)which gives us all much pleasure seeing them use it every year.
