I have tried to grow bell peppers this year and have very limited results.  I know that many people have found them slow to ripen with the weather but instead of being bell-shaped, mine were a bit squashed in shape.  I probably didn't get them started early enough but how big a pot should I be growing them in for better results.

Treat 'em like tomoatoes - so 12" or so - or three plants to a grow bag.  I believe bells are better under glass - I had a few bells, but none ripened outside....

Debz, I see that you are from Glasgow. I grow sweet peppers and chillies in my Greenhouse in Glasgow and just picked the last of huge crop of peppers today. They really need the extra heat in Glasgow, as well as an early start from seed in heat indoors in February.
I grow mine in an old 60 lt tomato bag planted up with 6 to 8 plants.

But don't expect perfect bell-shaped bell peppers that you see in the supermarket.  That's the thing when you grow your own, they come out "naturally", not forced into straight lines, eg, my cucumbers are never arrow straight like you get in supermarkets, all mine come out bent.

I now find the "fresh" veg in supermarkets are "plastic" looking - too perfect!!

Many thanks for all your replies.  I did have them in the greenhouse but I think my problems started with late germination and too small pots.  I will treat them like the tomatoes in future as I am really happy with the crops I have had from them the last couple of years.  I don't expect them to be perfectly shaped but just a little more bell shaped and slightly less pancake shaped would be better.
