i can see from what your saying new shoot i need to get the leeks a bigger size before planting them out and I've also taken on board DD's advise

i know my late father in law used to grew large leeks i think they where musselburgh but as i said ours where small but tasty the only problem was you needed several to make a meal where the larger ones you needed less and they lasted over a longer period

but hopefully I've learned a bit more about growing leeks that i need to put into practice starting this week sowing my leek seed many thanks RW

I as I said before grow leeks bought at the local market at €6 for a hundred they are a no brain'er I think there are  blue Solaise  and they are reputed to be hardy... more I cannot say... in the utmost of sincerity and friendliness
Bleu de Solaise is an excellent leek that stands very well over winter.  The seeds are widely available in the UK too.

Rowland, one way to get leeks to get to a decent size is to liquid-feed them.

We used to grow about 200+, and every Saturday would feed them with some nettle tea, mixed with comfrey tea and some 6X diluted in water - all mixed up, and smelling awful, but fabulous for leeks, as the mixture stayed in the folds, and made them very lush! There was a bit of rust on the leaves, but not on the white end.

They all grew from biro-refill size to about 2" diameter, and apart from a bit of hoeing, they just sat there for the whole winter, like leeks do!

I've always grown musselburgh and its always overwintered here pretty well.  Like Lettice I'll be pulling them for at least the next 6 weeks.  I've tried other varieties but always end up back here.  Must make me quite dull I suppose.
