In our house it had to at least smell as if you were having a proper roast dinner on a Sunday, even if you couldn't afford the joint ::)
But they were tasty :)

We are big fans of brisket but like others have said you need to buy it from a good butcher.

Buy a good big piece, say 7-8 lbs. Its about £2.30 lb in my butchers so wont break the bank.

I put it on a stand over a tray and give it 20-30 minutes in a very hot oven then turn the oven down to 100 which is gas1 in my oven and tip a small glass of water into the tray.  Cook for 9-10 hours.  A lot of the fat will drip out which makes lovely dripping.  You finish up with a really tender tasty piece of beef which will make lots of meals.  Go out for the day- after lowering the oven temp. - and let it cook.
Sometimes i slice the whole lot up, make a big pan of gravy with the meat juices in the tray and freeze in portions.  Or after the roast dinner have the rest cold with jacket tates and in sandwiches.

Its excellent value for money.

We buy belly pork quite a lot as it's one of OH's favourites!

Last night we had it glazed with maple syrup, salt and a smidgen of 5-spice, served with loads of 'bubble and squeak' made with crushed potatoes, baby greens and a little too much butter...

Soooooo good!

What is plate beef? I'm interested in more frugal cuts of meat too. Long cooking is great. I wouldn't say belly pork is very cheap nowadays, as its a bit fashionable now, but offal - liver - remains reasonable.  :) Long cooking cuts of beef are good....

A cut close to where you get brisket. Needs slow cooking as brisket does would has a nice fat layer and is cooked on the bone

Yes it is deer.  :) Quite expensive from the shops, but not too expensive if you can get hold of some direct from the country.  ;)

The wildfowling season starts on the 1st of September so that'll be the cheapest cuts of meat for us. I was looking in Sainsburys the other day, two duck breasts £6!!!!!
We have 3 freezers on the go (though ones the dogs becase we feed raw), the others are filled with geese, rabbits, pheasants, partridge, duck and whatever else comes from friends. We never waste any of it  :D

A memory from my childhood - briskett.  Cooked long and gently it melts in the mouth,  ditto Pork blade,  stuffed and roasted very slowly.     Cheers,    Tony.
