August and September sowing
« on: July 22, 2023, 13:52 »
My 6 year old great niece is really loving growing her own vegetables which makes me enormously happy. I provided her with the seeds in the spring and she is now sending me pictures of what she has harvested. Today it is her carrots.

She would like to sow more seeds in the spaces she now has in her raised beds. Any suggestions as to what she can sow in August/September that is easy and likely to succeed? She lives near York and has a sunny protected garden.

Great to hear about your great niece loving to grow veg.
Its only worth  growing if she and her family like to eat it but here are a few: -

Winter Lettuce, Winter Spring Onions, Winter Onions, Early Peas like Meteor (Sow ASAP).

Better With Fine Netted Protection: -
Perpetual Spinach, Rainbow Chard, Beetroot, Pak Choi, Rocket, Baby Spinach

Needs Fine Netted Protection: -
Radish, Spring Cabbage. Kale, Italian Kale, Turnips

With Cloche If Possible: -
Broad Beans In November (Aquadulce Claudia or The Sutton)

...And some short carrots! When I was a kid, just to pull the tiny ones with about a couple of tiny inches of veg meant that I tasted something that nobody gets from the shops, and I was hooked!

They'll also 'big out' to a reasonable size by October too!

Maybe buy a pot of chives and some other small herbs to edge the beds and to harvest later on once she starts to learn how to cook them. Yum! If she fancies mint, then just get a large black bucket with holes in the bottom, put some manure and soil in, plant it then cover with some more soil (supermarket ones will grow roots if put in a jar of water) BUT tell her not to place the bucket on top of soil but to support it with some bricks because - you know the film "The Great Escape" - yeah!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Good idea about the herbs, GG!

I'm growing Basil and Parsley from supermarket pots, just separating the stems and replanting them in a seed tray of compost. They're a bit leggy, but it's the leaves which we want, and as they're in the GH, it doesn't matter about the room to grow so much!

Thank you every one for your suggestions. I have gone for Leaf Beet Perpetual Spinach, Lettuce Winter Density (Semi-cos type) and Spring Onion White Lisbon Winter Hardy.

When spring comes I will be buying her more to grow. Question. I always grow from seeds but do you think a 6 year old would prefer growing from plug plants?

Many years ago, my children (and later, the ones who came to school garden club) were always amazed when the seeds they had sewn actually grew!
A bit of a bummer if they didn't, of course, but that was a lesson on 'if at first you don't succeed etc' so all good to learn  :)
