I've just planted 20 asparagus crowns, following the very precise instructions carefully and covering them with a lovely blanket of compost from one of our bins
Let's hope they are a success as at the moment they looked like dried dead spiders

That`s Asparagus for you, big dead spiders.lol. :D I planted up a bed about a month ago for a client. So we are BOTH on tenterhooks.

Those tenterhooks are a bit chilly though aren't they

I didn't know you could plant aparagus now... I've ordered mine from Kings and will be getting the bed ready on the New Year...
I'm getting slightly more than the recommended spacing would suggest (12 crowns for a 3.1m/10' bed) - do people think it'll be ok to cram them in or should I give the spare 3-4 away?
I'm putting then down the middle of a 1.2m/4' bed...

I'm probabaly not the one to ask -- she who squashed in three extra ones in the corners of the triangular bed

savbo, if you do a sort of zig-zag planting in the bed you can accomodate the extra asparagus roots. Just try to keep the spacing as even as you can and you should manage it. But don't try to put in more. Production will suffer.

cheers Trillium - guess I can dig a 2' trench down the middle of the plot with two raised ridges in it and plant alternately...?

have to say I am confused about asparagus spacing. Most books seem to say 12-18 inches per plant but bob flowerdew's books say one stride apart (which would be more like 1 meter) - he says the more space you give them the better they produce. Am planting mine in the spring and am wondering hos much space is really enough...
Anyone out there spaced them farther apart than 18"?

Perhaps he's got short legs ???
I've spaced mine at 12 ins as that was what it said in the RHS Book my DD has ;)

I`ve done about 12" apart all round in 3 staggered rows. :D
