Crazy Weather !!
« on: June 24, 2023, 15:36 »
;) Hi Everyone hope your all keeping well & busy. :D
My comment/question is about this crazy weather were having.
Plants & vegies/fruit this year are all over the place, loads of growth & no
flowers & crops are either very sparce or a lot more than usual. This year
my cucumber only lasted about 2 weeks in the greenhouse & died off & my
2 tomato plants took ages to grow, even now there about 12" shorter than
normal for this time of year but there in flower & have fruit growing on them.
Everyone can grow Radish but this year I've got loads of growth on top but there
not bulking up.
Do you think it is down to this weather & is anyone else noticing this or am
I also being affected by all this heat & going slightly mad ?.
I look forward to any sane replies
   Keith ::)

I'm just a bit further north than you Keith, and things took a while to get going. I'd put this down to the cooler May weather(especially night temps). Things are romping away now(weeds!!) and look like they have caught up. Very proud to have my first cauli head forming and 'freaky' pumpkin is swelling daily

I've got hardly anything to grow!
Sweetcorn is amazing, but most of the rest died upon planting out, and I've had ti start again.
Okra worked okay, but it's still very tiny despite being nurtured since march.

I had to redo my cucumbers - first lot just died but the second lot are flying away.

And I haven't even started courgettes yet!

It’s been a slow start, too cold until the end of May, then too dry and finally too hot which finished off a lot of my peas, mange tout and broad beans which should have still been producing. Luckily I’ve been very diligent with my succession sowing so have more coming. Courgettes are finally getting into gear, tomatoes and cucumbers are racing ahead with small fruit on both. Like most years, the weather’s a bit odd ???

Definitely rather hot again this year.
Broad beans and peas doing well.
Beetroot took a while to get going but responding well after the storm and heavy rain.
Tomatoes showing small fruits and growing well. Runners and french beans looking good so far.
Needed to water a lot!!
Keep digging

Had a much better may and June than last year, in fact we've already had a much warmer and sunnier summer than last year already.  Although having to water the plot in may and early june is annoying, but now we are getting a load of rain things are looking amazing, including any weeds unfortunately   >:( . Need to sow a lot of late season stuff like kohl rabi, fennel etc. Now

I'm a long distance from all of you, but our weather has been highly unusual.

June usually brings daily high temperatures of 32 to 35oC, and rain under 5 inches a month.  We have had more than a month's rain this week, and temperatures have struggled to get up to 25oC until yesterday.

It has not hurt the vegetable garden too much. The main concern is whether the roots remain too saturated and I end up with struggling plants due to root loss.  So far, that seems not to have happened.  I need to apply fertilizer to replace what the rain has washed out of the soil, but intend to wait until the soil has dried for several days.  We are getting decent tomatoes, peppers, and courgettes.

It has been a challenging year already but each year has difficult periods. Hoping the rest of the year is a bit more "normal."

For me it's been the cold May/early June and the lack of rain until last Sunday.

It feels like we've been having August weather in only June

I'm greatly appreciating the soil being damp again.

I've found that most of my plants (both ornamental and veg) have been very slow to get going except for my leeks which I'm planting out today. In the g'house my toms are doing fine but my sweet corn are a lot smaller than they should be with some having side shoots and some not. Tassels are just forming now so I'll see how it goes. Snaps took a bit to get climbing then had a flush of flowers which produced some delicious pods but now there's no more flowers - bah! I did water during that long dry spell but the g'house temps got around 50C during the day.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

My conservatory is hitting 50 degrees c too so I haven’t left anything growing in there.
It’s bad enough hoping the chairs etc don’t melt. My tomatoes are happy outside.
