Title: When to prune cordon apple trees.
Post by: SusieB on November 13, 2009, 17:14
I planted some cordon apple and pear trees earlier this year, but haven't pruned them yet.  Can anybody tell me when I should do it?
Many thanks.

Normally you prune them in the summer.  Unless they have made a massive amount of growth in the wrong directions I would leave them for now.

Cheers,

That's right, summer prune

There is some good advice here http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/fruit_veg_diary/fruit_veg_mini_project_september_2e_apple.asp

I didn't prune them this summer, so some side shoots are over a foot long.  Is it still best to wait till next summer?  I presume they won't fruit next year (I think I planted 1yr old maidens in late spring), so I won't be losing apples.
Thanks for the advice.
