A potato problem?
« on: July 20, 2013, 10:05 »
I have just dug up some of my Yukon Gold and have a problem that I have not met before. The majority of the crop are excellent but 5 potatoes are covered in hard pustules. They look awful but it is just a surface thing; the inside of the potato looks fine. Has anyone any idea of what has happened and if I have a serious problem?

Ewwww.

Could be potato wart disease.

I'll see if I can find some information.

I dont think that it is potato wart disease but I have sent a photo to the defra site , thank you AS. It could be swollen lenticles although if it is it is certainly an extreme form!! I have laid them out to dry and will keep you posted.

Thinking about it more I am pretty sure that DD has nailed it. The affected potatoes were all at the bottom of the containers where the soil will have stayed wettest. I have previously grown my potatoes in air containers so wont  have created the conditions for water-logging. This year they have been grown in ordinary black bags.

When I started taking them out I had been telling myself off for not watering enough as the top half was very dry!

OH is very happy as the unaffected ones look mouth watering  :D

THANK YOU.

I went to lift a plant today and found my potatoes had fruited, pulled the plant and had a decent crop of potatoes underneath.

Oooo I've also had these swollen lenticles on my earlies, odd because we've had little rain and I never watered them. I just scrubbed them off with the scourer

Ah.  That sounds more like scab.  I got that on my first earlies and read that it's more likely if you don't water enough and/or have poor soil - both of which apply to mine! It just rubs off though as you mentioned  :)
