hi everyone.

well ive done it. got myself an allotment plot.

its not wide, but long. theres a ricketty shed at the top surrounded by brambles and brambles at the bottom. but in the middle which is 30-40 meters long, its a mixture or grass, longish grass and a harder type of plant thats knee high.

with it being mid november, whats the best way forward? the allotment owner as offered to clear the site and rotavate it for me,should i go with that?

any advice would be great, cheers.

Depends on whats there, if theres mare(horse)tail, couch grass, bindweed or any other nasties then refuse the rotavating to stop it multiplying. But if theres nothing like that then say "Hell Yes!"

If your going to spray it. I'd take up the offer of rotovation. It will chop up all the weeds and a lot will re-sprout, but they will be smaller weaker plants with small root systems IMHO.

Most people won't agree with this, but hey it works for me

Have a look at this article by John on weeds and what to do

Hi Gidster,
like you also struggling with new plot. I started a thread below
 Who's right?
sorry not sure how to post a link, but it's a bit down the page from here, as I'd had lots of advice on grass and wanted to know what people thought and why, hope it helps and happy digging/spraying/rotavating whatever!

Yes, esp if its a slow bladed rotovater rather than something like my mantis which speeds along chopping everything up into little bits so they are just too fiddly to pull up. And keep a sharp hoe ready, keep hoeing any new sprouts that appear.

There's no real right or wrong way to be honest, we all have different ways of doing things some work for one but not another.
Enjoy once you get the bug its difficult to stop.
