newbie help please!
« on: May 30, 2008, 07:01 »
hi everyone!
I'm attempting gyo for the first time properly this year, and I have veg patch setting up nicely.

I have grown various toms from seed in a mini plastic greenhouse, and now I want to put them out, but the leaves are covered in pin prick brown spots....IS THIS BLIGHT????

I am terrified, and from searches I've mad eonline, the spots look different from the pics, but I'm not sure. I've never seen the spots before, and I have grown toms for a few years.

can anyone help me? Should I destroy my plants? I really don't want to, they've taken a lot of love to reach this stage, but I'd rather not use chemicals if i can help it!

thanks in advance
clara

Are they light brown/dark brown, how long have they been evident?

Any chance of a photo.

Welcome BTW, sorry your first post had to be with a problem.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

hi

gwiz, just been outside and yes, it's pretty similar. the leaves aren't looking that good tbh, maybe I should give up on them before they damage other things?

Is it right that there's no cure for blight if I have it? This is really upsetting! I've got some yellow cherry bells and tiger striped toamtoes all with these spots on them... boo!

clara

Clara,

This could be rain or sun damage.

Other than in a few costal regions, as in this map, there have been no other confirmed outbreaks.

Blight Outbreaks

I have joined 'blight watch' and will get notification of any outbreaks locally.

We have, however, just had a warning to say that we've had a period (called a Smith Period), where the humidty & temperature conditions are "conducive for sporulation of the potato blight pathogen on lesions".

This does not mean we'll get it, but the more of these periods we have, the more likely it is. We've only had one so far.

oooh blight watch and smith period, there's so much I don't know!

I've been and taken off all the spotty leaves I can see. I guess if more spots appear, I should get rid, what do people think?

is there no way of saving the plants?

thanks to everyone, you lovey helpful lot. I can see i'm going to like it here!

I'm still learning! I'd never heard of a 'Smith Period' this time last year.

I'm not saying it isn't blight, but at the moment it's very, very doubtful. If is just sunburn - they'll recover!

This does sound like sun damage -  I get this on some of my outdoor toms.  If the plants look healthy otherwise, leave them be.  The blight we had last year made the leaves go completely brown from the ends upwards and they curled up and just crumbled if you touched them.

I got blight last year but some of the toms survived and some of those were Tigerella which maybe the stripey one you described. The GD's survived too but the Italian ones all succumbed  :(

hope it's not blight
