Title: So who has ordered their seeds then?
Post by: kooringa on November 29, 2005, 15:14
Am I the last person on the planet to have ordered my seeds for next year?

I was thinking of doing it around Christmas - order the spuds, veggie seeds, and onions.

Am I leaving it too late then?

My freezer for next year depends on  your advice if I am not too late already

Yes, I saw you ordered your potatoes - the saga made me laugh!  Glad it got sorted in the end.

That is why I delayed ordering mine - its all your fault (joke).

Got all my seeds, except parsnips, in the end of season sales. Rounded it off at Wyvale today with some £4.45 cucumber seed for 50p.

Just need to amble to the local nursery in the new year and drool at the 80+ different seed spuds on sale and buy the onions, shallots & garlic at the same time.

I hope to be self-sufficient in heritage pea seed next year.

It amazed me that they were selling off all their seeds- most dated for 2011 - for just 50p a packet.

 I suppose they're clearing space for santa's grotto !!!

Not all their seeds were in the sale, I found. The ones at the back of the store didn't have their bar codes crossed out. Nearly bought some of those!

I've got my order book from the allotment (King's seeds).  I've ticked off what I want for next year, but I have to have a look and throw out the seeds that are really old and the one's left over from this year, and strike off the ones I've got already.  My OH has just bought a book on the different potatoes, and is going through to see which ones to grow next year.  We tried King Edward this year, and we didn't do at all well on them.  Apparently, they need specific soils to grow.  But the others were good.  I have to get the order by the end of October.  Anyway, I'm just going to do our butties and get down the lottie as a lot needs to be done for preparation for the winter.  Because our soil is very acidy (is that a word ???), we have to get the lime down, and get some fertaliser and stuff, and keep it going through to next year.

I've actually been quite impressed with Wilkos seed potatoes. Limited range but they were good quality.

I had seed potatoes from a specialist for the show growers this year and was really let down, late delivery and rubbish quality of some varieties. Last time I give him my business.

I might just sow what's kicking around the bottom of my tin & see what comes up!

Careful if buying seeds on offer at garden centres which store them in greenhouse type buildings , even though they might have a couple of years to the sell by date,  that is when they are stored at the correct temperature, it is too hot in these places,  I bought several pkts  a few years ago and hardly any of them  germinated.

Never had a problem with packets from  - normal  shops though

That's why I prefer mail order as a rule :)
