Having grown loads of different ones I don't rate the gem or the veg spagetti in the flavour stakes, Jumbo pink banana isn't that tasty either.

Butternuts are good tasters as is Crown Prince, Thelma Sanders (prolific too), Festival, Uchiki Kuri and Potimarron will give you some good meals  :)

has anyone tried dudhi? Other Names: White gourd, white pumpkin, Lauki, Cucuzza, Po gua
we had a fantastic crop the year before (planted as sister planting in sweetcorn bed) and didnt do well (well it died too soon) last year.
I am trying again this year.
They make a very good stew, soup (lentil).
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

Only to eat -- never grown it at all.

Is it a sprawling sort?

hi sunshine *waving*
it is a sprawling one and it did damaged a couple of sweet corns. but their taste and quality outweighed its menace (had to chop the shoots at regular intervals).
I have 10 seeds (bought this year but just for trying. dont know about the seed company and how good they will be) I can share half for something else with you.

Has anyone tried  'Lunga di Napoli'  think I spelt it right.   You get quantity, taste and texture, wonderful roasted.  The downside is having enough family, friends, and neighbours to get through one squash, which can weigh  anywhere between 25 + 50 lbs.

There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

I grew some from seed last year, and gave away the excess to a neighbour - like you do :)

Mine on the plot did zilch, but hers in the garden grew enormous, it took over one side completely but she did get a couple of lovely big squash ( I still don't know what they taste like, so I will have to try again ::) )

They need a very rich soil, plenty of manure and compost, which is  not surprising considering their huge size.  If you taste the raw flesh there is a sligt hint of melon. The cooked flesh is quite sweet, a real treat when roasted.

I love the melon tasting squashes  :)  The dudhi is very nutritious!  I've not grown that but would like to

The lunga one looks great  :) :)

Am going to have a go at trying to grow squash this year for the first time (although it is only our second year on the plot) - have heard that Patty Pan squashes grow well there so going to get some seed and give it a go. Might have a go at trying to grow pumpkins later in the year too :)
