I am fitting a gate latch and the gate only come's half way back on the post. so rather than using the catch i wondered if i router a slot out of the post would it work as a catch. As the catches i have need to fix to the face of the post.

If I understand you correctly,can't you pad out the face of the gate with a block of wood to bring both faces flush?

Which side are you thinking of putting the latch on , the side without the 1/2 post or with the post?
If its the 1/2 post side you just need something cranked, failing that something like you suggest, a vice and a big hammer :D

I'd agree with above, fit a plate onto the gate post to bring them flush, then you need to compromise the structure of the post by routing a slot halfway into it.

If you lose the middle bracket which restricts upward/downward movement, cut a slot in your post for the latch to fit into so you don't need the end bracket either, you could then fix a screw into the gate to act as a stop/rest and another above the latch to stop it from spinning round further than necessary when it is lifted up to clear the post.

I got the saw and cut a slot in the post and it works a treat now :lol:

It has one top and bottom but the person i done the gate for wanted the handle i tried to get out of fitting it by saying it give the crooks something to climb on but they still wanted it fitting :wacko: but hey ho its done now.

Is that the last of the 020's or the first of the MS200T's? and BTW,did you need to modify the retaining bracket to allow the latch to raise high enough to clear the post before droping into the slot ?
edit :or cut an upside down sort of "L" in the post?

I'm confused smud6ie, are you asking Kris about his chainsaw and how he made the slot or are you asking me about the slot I suggested before he posted that he had done so? It isn't totally clear to me... :D You having quoted me and all that...... :)

I got the last of the 020 and we (work)have the ms200t, i didnt use the retainer as the slot worked well on its own.
