New plot - Found some raspberries!
« on: October 03, 2007, 20:02 »
Hi chaps,

Just cropping the last thick area of weeds etc and I've found about 20 raspberry canes in there! They're in an awkward place and want to move them. Do they transplant well or should I leave them?

They are just in a bunch and stuffed with weeds. I'd like to move and get them in rows so it's easier to manage and pick the fruits next year.

Mark.

let em drop all leaves and then move them use some wire and two posts to make a clothes line affair with line half way up and at the top 8ft posts dig holes 2ft .treat before burying/ train the stems along the wires .clean all weeds from the root systems before planting at same depth as before .. wait till next seasons end for pruning and restoring the fruiting stems
still alive /............

i already have chicken wire attached to the Heras as it is the type with 4" gaps.  Are you saying plant the canes behind the fence.?  If so this i can do as my neighbour would appreciate them also.

cheers

the wire netting ( chicken size ) will allow them to peck any bits that grow through but not rip the base of the canes to ruination /...

cudders - just be mindful that raspberries grow like weeds - they can be very invasive if allowed to grow unchecked.

and you didn't say wether they were summer or autumn fruiting - it makes a difference (especially with pruning)

they do transplant easily enough - but they don't like their roots to be disturbed once in the ground - so it is always worth using a weed surpressing method - to eradicate the need for digging/hoeing.

i use thick cardboard in my fruit cage - topped with a mulch.
