I picked up a bag of red onion sets from a retailer today, its a bit early but I prefer to store them myself somewhere cool and dark otherwise they dry out on the store shelf.

According to the supplier, the onions need to be planted out in mid-Feb onwards.

Given the mild winter to date, could I plant them out now to get a good, early start? I will harden them off for a week or so first.

Given that the weather could turn, I'd wait, don't let the recent weather make you complacent.

Shallots can stand the cold more than onion sets, my shallots may go out in February if I don't get too cold doing it, but not the sets. They usually go out in the warmer March weather.

Where is the best place to store a bag of sets for a month or more? Bottom of the fridge?
