Too late for sunflower and pumpkin?
« on: May 23, 2019, 18:32 »

Pretty much as the title. All my sunflowers and pumpkins have failed to germinate.

No, plenty of time. Just sow direct outside.

I'll be resowing my squash, pumpkins and courgettes at the weekend as no germination from sowing 2 weeks ago  ;)
Glad to hear that it isn't too late.

I've got to re-sow my Hunter squash, they failed to germinate, unlike all the others. I'll just sow them in card pots and plant out as soon as they germinate.

My Uchiki Kuri squash seeds bought this year germinated in about a week, whereas my year-old cuke seeds (La Diva) and courgettes (Green Bush) were very patchy, and those that did took much longer to germinate.

Ended up chitting the remainder of each packet in sandwich boxes on damp kitchen paper, which is something I'd recommend to those struggling at this relatively late stage to make sure you're not trying to germinate duff seeds. (Should see a tiny root appearing from the 'pointy end' after about 5 days in a warm place - pot up immediately with the root downwards.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Thanks for the input. Think I will try to chit the sunflower and pumpkin seeds I have left.

As I side note I have 7 year old courgette and plum tomato seeds that had an unexpected 100% germination so now I have too many! Swings and roundabouts...

done it on a few seeds and I would suggest Pre-Chitting them, done on iy on all my squash, courgettes and other seeds this year with great success.
In a tub between 2 sheets of damp kitchen roll in a warmish place, once the sprut appears plant about an inch or so deep.
