Late sowing peas
« on: July 15, 2013, 11:43 »
I have four 12ft lines of peas sown 2 weeks apart and following DD's method of chucking them in, tying and staking.  My question - the first line of peas is now starting to come to an end,  I have some seeds left  is there any reason not to sow another line to replace the finished one in the same space?

Thanks

None at all, but keep fingers crossed you have time to crop them in case we get early frosts.

Also be aware that peas sown this late run a high risk of getting mildew.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ok - thank you DD.  Its worth a go then and nothing to lose apart from a few old seeds!  Next job to try and break the hard baked soil enough to get the seeds in  :)

We've got some starting now, Alimilly, and they should get away pretty quickly in this current hot spell.

I've also just sown a second crop of klevedon peas ten days ago and they're up already and under cover from the birds. I haven't seen any pea mildew on our site recently, although there is a small touch on my courgettes. I understand the risk. I guess the plan would be to make sure I burn any infected material if it arises, as I wouldn't want any spores blowing around in the Spring.

I planted two rows last Sunday using DD's method.  I was just up at the plot watering and they are all up already - it is amazing how quickly things are popping up with this lovely warm weather.

Goferit, Eblana!

DD's right about mildew, but you may get away with it this year!

We're banking on it with seven beds of peas well past their produce-by-date! (They all started late because we had such an awful spring)

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

My peas sown on Ist July are now flowering and I can see the first setting pods... just 6 weeks ! If only it were this easy in the Spring.
The weather has been favourable, and certainly not a sign of mildew... it doesn't seem that sort of year, along with the blight. Am experimenting with the peas totally covered in enviromesh to protect from any pea moth that might turn up at the back end of the Summer.

My peas which were sown on the 7th July also starting to flower.  As I said earlier in the post I used DD's method, when I was sowing there was some on the plot who told me that it wouldn't work and that I would need netting or something for them to grow up but they are all now eating their words as they look great and I have only had one or two escapees that I have had to tuck back in.  Not a bit of a sign of mildew so fingers and toes crossed.

I tried DD's method this year and it didn't seem to work very well for me. It did keep the pea plants roughly within the boundaries of the string but it didn't support them. They all just flopped around on the ground or up a little bit, but they didn't go up the way they would with netting or sticks to climb up.

I had to tie all mine to the supporting wires to get them to grow upwards and it was a pita so I'm going to try something different next year.
