small wasp nest.... now what?
« on: May 31, 2010, 10:37 »
Hi guys,

I'm off to the lotty shortly with it being such a nice day but I wanted some advice first:

I have a wasp nest in my little metal shed, suspended from the roof.  it's no bigger than 4cm (2 ins) across just now, and it looks exactly like this pic I found when doing a search:

Would I be right in saying that with it being so small that only the queen is likely to be in residence just now, as I haven't seen any other wasps flying in and out, and I'd have expected it to be larger if there was a more developed colony?

I'm not afraid of wasps, but I don't want a nest near where I work, and considering that I'm hearing on the grapevine that some of the allotment holders are complaining that they will be stung if I get bees, imagine what a colony of wasps would do!!

Should I just get one of those wasp nest  killing sprays and do the job myself?  as I say, it's only small at the moment.

Su

At that size you could use a wide piece of wood and squash it flat (really ,really flat) without nasty messy chemicals.

Put some training shoes on in case queenie comes home while you are doing it. :D

Take a Cricket bat to it !! If you are brave or foolhardy hold a small container under it and scoop it in, lid on quickly and empty away from your shed !! The nest is a marvel, made from chewed wood and plant fibre and so delicate if you touch it, it will more than likely disintergrate. good luck  ;)

Just bash it off, they often try again, but if you keep bashing it off in the end they get the hint and go elsewhere  ::)

Use a lighter and just burn it, be careful of any flammable stuff near you. It smells superb, and the larvae make a popping sound!
Politicians are like nappies - they need changing for the same reason

LOL,  I went to remove it with a container and a sheet of thin plastic and just as I approached the nest, queenie popped her head out!   gave me the fright of my life!

Mind you,  I think I'd prefer that she was in there when I remove it than out and about and just returning

Will try again on wednesday when the weather is nice!

thanks for the suggestions guys :)
