Title: Planting seeds & follow up watering
Post by: simbamara on June 10, 2018, 11:22
Good Morning
I have two questions please
I planted seeds in my beds yesterday & watered them.
How frequently should I water if it does not rain? Even if it rains ?
What can I plant in soil in the shade ?
Thanks

It's a difficult thing to answer because it depends on how quickly your soil dries out and what weather you will be getting this next week or so. If you gave them a good watering afterwards then just leave them for 2-3 days as the drying-out of the actual top of the soil is supposed to help keep in any moisture below but let them be if it rains. I tend to grow brassicas in light shade as they don't bolt as quickly.

If you have sown the seed in drills (lines) and the soil seems dry when you poke your finger in it, the safest way to water is alongside the drills not directly over them. This stops the soil setting hard over the top of germinating seeds as it dries out again, as this stops the seedlings being able to grow. I use a small plastic jug as it is easier to control where the water is going

And growing in shade: lettuce, pak choi, spinach all thrive
