Title: Pumpkin Competition 2012
Post by: mumofstig on March 18, 2012, 10:15
The winner will grow the biggest pumpkin rather than the heaviest.
There will also be a poll at the end for the prettiest pumpkin  :)
There is no prize just a note under your username to say you won  :D

The rules.....

Newbies can register but must have 50 posts before end of competition.
Names have to be registered by 30th June to count.
Please show the measurement, with photo, by 31st October, when competition will end.
Pumpkins being grown for Exhibition Showing* cannot be entered.

Anyone who disagrees with Moderators will be disqualified

*This does not include a small local or allotment show.

Good luck everybody!

Just the one entry, the 'prettiest pumpkin' poll is something of a consolation prize for the people who can't manage to grow a big'un  ::)

If you're going for big, (no point entering unless you're going for "pretty"!), it needs to be something like "Atlantic Giant".

The last time I grew an Atlantic Giant, it took up 35 square metres!
(yes I am sad, I measured it)
And it wasn't even that big, I only got 120 Kg.
I got fed up with roast Pumpkin, so I made 35 gallons of wine with it.

well that certainly gives me a little encouragment we are fairly sheltered in our rear patio by our building and 6 foot fencing on other 2 sides and get the sun quite well for most of the day, so i should manage to grow something larger than a grape then ??  :D

I've only just decided to plant pumpkins again this year - they will be outside, not in the polytunnel - so I doubt they will be as big and they have to survive the chicken's attentions.

Mine are doing quite well and I'll soon put them in the unheated greenhouse, then hopefully the plot in 10 days to two weeks.

It's all very well bring the plants on with heat, but that can lead to weak plants that won't tolerate the outside conditions very well.

It will probably be ok, but it might be a problem if they expose the roots.
You can help the situation by covering every leaf joint with soil, because the plant will then form extra roots (like a cutting) and make up for losses.

It wasn't a winner size wise, but got the "prettiest" last year, (due more to the display around it, I suspect).

I think with a bit more TLC it would have got bigger, but if I remember correctly, the biggest was also grown outside.

Anyway, just to prove you can get something off an AG outside, this was it:

My only surviving squash plants from the monsoon this summer was gem squash.  The pumpkins and other squash lost the will to live and withered away  ::)

Sooooooooo unless we are having a 'small but perfectly formed' class, I'm out

No chance of my hundredweight (which isn't!) winning prettiest pumpkin - it is one ugly so and so.  Not even a mother could love that one!  It will be perfect for All Hallows though as its face looks like Freddie Kruger even without the carving!!)

This year, simply getting anything that turns orange will be a winner for me. Grandson aged 5 planted Pumpkin Mars and we are racing against time, surrounding it with bananas, shining a daylight craft lamp on it 24/7. It is near a window but where's the sun gone???
It is a nice shape for carving but grandson is dead keen for his mummy to have the flesh for cooking.  I think we are almost there .....

My "giant" pumpkin was tiny and about as pretty as a bulldog chewing a wasp. ::)

Well no pretty pumpkins here - here is my entrant for ugliest pumpkin which grew more wrinkly the more water I gave it!  It was a relief to see the one at Wisley looking almost as ugly as mine!  I just wish I was better at pumpkin carving to do it justice - it looked like Freddie Kreuger's face before carving!!  How's this for a complexion??!

It is a hundredweight variety but wasn't huge.  It weighed 2.2 Kg and measured about 63cm - so not huge but I was just thankful to have some pumpkins this year at all.  The children appreciated it, (and one of the Mars pumpkins I also grew) for their first Halloween.

(Honest, the children are happy!)

The Mars pumpkin measured 56.5cm but I forgot to weigh it before carving it!

I didnt register for the competition but here is the Mars which my little grandson sowed. It grew to 80 cm circumference and weighed 3.5 kg  - with the help of daylight craft lamp, ripe bananas and windowsill near a radiator we finally achieved full ripeness on Oct 31!  This was our most successful this year. Another Mars was much smaller  though a good shape. Mammoths didnt do well at all.

I've checked the thread pages and can only find angela's pumpkin, and one of my own, that are eligible for voting.

So I hereby declare angeladavies the winner of 'the prettiest pumpkin' with this lovely pic  :D
Congratulations!

Oh that's so cute Angela. I love hearing children's mispronunciations. Do I detect a new thread whilst chatting on the plot.
