Pruning my Acer
« on: May 22, 2008, 12:18 »
I have a Japanese Acer in my back garden and it has a lovely shape to it, but unfortunately it is getting a bit big and I think it needs a prune. Does anyone have any tips on pruning an Acer. Are there any specific ways to do it. I don't want to loose the shape.

Thanks in advance.

Don't prune now. They can bleed badly if pruned in the spring, which can lead to disease.
Leave it until late Autumn. then you can cut it back to the desired shape. Remove any die-back to the live wood.

Thanks srebmob, That was quickly answered.

I'll wait until late Autumn then. There are a few dead bits, which I will remove in the Autumn also. Thanks for the advice.
