Henhouse from "panel" offcuts?
« on: July 24, 2008, 09:38 »
My OH works for a company that makes the metal panels that make warehouse type buildings. As they would be weathertight and nowhere for spidermites to live and easy to hose down and warm in winter/ cool in summer (they are insulated) I thought they should make good henhouses...........................but how?

Has anyone already worked this out? If so could you post a piccy please.  :)

You'd need some sort of framework to bolt them to. Would suggest something like dexion or a very lightweight angle. Could use plastic trim to close off any open ends but allow enough at the top for ventilation.

Floor made of ply, jig out a pophole and away you go !!

Biggest issue is the temperature but if you're happy it would be ok, then can't really see a prob.

Might be worth ringing round. Might get some offcuts cheap. No idea who stocks the stuff round here.

Only other concern is whether the hens could peck the insulation off ?

depends if the insulation is 'sandwiched' between something else????

Turkeys need to be kept VERY warm for the first 2 weeks, but when they are older, they don't like to be too warm, so Brian would make sure there are lots of vents!!!!

Yep the panels are "sandwich panels" so pecking not a problem except they would hurt their beaks if they try

I'm hoping for very cheap offcuts or seconds and it may turn out to be in many different colours, the "rainbow shed" :D

Maybe it will be the new eglu, "scraplu"

You MUST post photos of your progress. It's an ingenious idea.

I've just cleaned mine out and there are so many nooks and crannies, it's impossible to clean everywhere.

Good luck with it.  :D

OH says it weighs 10kg per sq.m. so it won't blow away

He also says that there is loads of scrap about in the uk, so I just need to work it out. Don't get too excited it'll take ages to get to the next stage, I don't think quickly at my age
