Turning wildflowers into grass
« on: July 27, 2008, 21:38 »
Last year we planted some wildflower seeds (no grasses in it) where our fruit trees grow (about 50 m2) But this year we are not sure it really works and want to change it to grass, I was wondering can we just strim the wild flowers back and then add grass seed?  and then stay on top of the strimming? I am not expecting perfect lawn, obviously, but then it doesn't need to be. Any thoughts would be really appreciated.

Got home last night and OH has gone and strimmed it all down. Think we will go ahead with grass seed as we are going away tomorrow and it will give it chance to get going without little ones running all over it.

If you're not wanting the flowers to grow back, make sure the seed heads are removed before you mow them down.  Otherwise you'll get re-seeding.  I have a mix of wildflowers, grass, and clover on part of my yard as I wanted an alternative to plain old grass and something that needs less water than a lawn does.  I'm really enjoying it, but I think a mix without grass would be a bit tougher to deal with...

The mix was meant to be low level, but it was a bit too much for my liking. I am hoping that if I put the grass seed down, that will dilute it out a bit.

Thanks for the advice

Sounds like a good plan.  I don't know how I missed the comment you made that your OH had already cut down the flowers.  Silly me. :)
