« on: January 15, 2008, 21:07 »
Hi people,

can you help me with a veg name please. Last year one of the allotmenteers gave me some black long runner beans that when you cooked they turned green. I don't know the name and would like to grow them this year.

thanks

They sound very much like my 'Violet Podded Climbing French Beans'.

Shown here 6th one down..........

PM me if you'd like some freebies in exchange for a stamp!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

DD, are the violet podded beans open pollinated? Are they as good as say the Painted Lady (?) runner bean?

IMHO French beans are nicer as more tender, all are open pollinated, as far as know and the purple one we had was an overall favourite for flavour that was  Blauhilde.

Try these (page down to 'Purple Teepee'). The beans grow ABOVE the foiliage & you can see what you're doing!

gobs has answered the first part. I like both sorts. There's something evocative about the smell of freshly cooking runners beans, especially the first picking of the year, but I find the climbing French beans are more tolerant of being left past their 'best before' date!
