celeriac mystery
« on: January 14, 2008, 16:24 »
so....I grew what I THOUGHT was celeriac last year - nurtured the seedlings, dug in plenty of well-rotted manure into the final planting-out space, planted them out when the days got warmer and brighter, thinned them, fed them, , watered them as needed (hah!) and damn near tucked them up at night with a mug of cocoa and a bedtime story.  And harvested precisely NOTHING.  Zippo.  Zilch.   Except a lot of foliage.   So - can anyone tell me - did I get sold a packet of mis-labelled flat-leaf parsley, or did i do something wrong?  I'd really like to try again this year, but don't really need any more parsley...

Might have been some other seed, as the leaves are quite different to parsley, much like celery, heavier scent and darker green.

What did the roots look like, then?

celeraic seed is very very small.  You get about a million seeds for  :D It is hard to mix up with anything else.

Parsley seed, in all its varieties, looks more like small cumin seeds.

Yes, if you know what the seed looks like.

And I have been known to put inner packets into wrong outer packets.

Plus if you smelt the seed it stinks of errr celery    The only thing I can think of and it is probably unlikey is to much nitrogen so its all top growth. I have grown loads this last year and all have bulbed nicely, I fed them with bonemeal about 3or4 times of the season.

You should empty all your seeds, loose, into a big plastic bag & then shake it up.  Then take a permanent marker pen and write on the bag ... "TAGETES"

I've grown celeriac this year, the tops look like celeriac but the root just hasn't developed.  I think I didn't trim the tops off at the right time.  Any suggestions welcome.

However, they do smell of celery, so I do know that they are what I think they are supposed to be.

Might have planted too deep?
If it wasn't for chemicals we'd be organic.

I dug it into a trench, advised because they need to be earthed up.  Perhaps that was a bad idea.

All we do is drag a bit of soil over them to "earth up". we've never put em in a trench. (its actually the stem that swells to make the veg not the root)

Bad advice!!!!

Celeriac needs to be planted at soil level.

Mine were small but lovely. Perhaps planted a bit close together.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I never even earth up (I'm not looking for an argue, but it's the root methinks).

Trench is for trench celery nothing to do with root crops, even if it is celer-iac.

Also, you  don't need to shave. Have we a wizzy on this, I shall post how I do mine there. As it needs sowing pretty soon.
