Title: swiss chard
Post by: upinsmoke on July 22, 2012, 18:44
Hi i am growing some swiss chard they taste great and seem  not to be popular with birds, slugs and rabbits.  I would like to know if there was a particular way that one should harvest the wonderfull leaves they produce.

I just cut them off close to the base on the plant with scissors

Or cut them close to the base with knife. They can be used by stripping the leaf and using that as a spinach like green and use the white( or coloured) stem in stir fries or veg stews or just use it al together. Are you cropping now?

I grew some last year and cut the oldest  stems off at the base, they then produced more

newer shoots.

Good stuff to grow!

We're sowing some for the winter months - it worked last year!

Earthy taste is welcome, but often needs a garlic nudge...

It can be used for dessert!  Hugh FW makes a tart from the leaves with apples and raisins in his veg recipe book
