When to plant a strawberry bed
« on: October 19, 2011, 15:57 »
Have recently taken over and allotment. Have cleared some of the raised beds and want to transplant my strawberry's from the pots they are in at home to one of the beds. Is it the right time to do this and would I need to net the bed overwinter?

I feel all I'm I am doing is clearing and weeding so it would be nice to plant something for a change.

you can move your strawberries now, they are perfectly hardy.
Mine are left un-netted during the winter ;)

If you have room and want to get something in the ground why not overwinter some onions and garlic.

Thanks Plottered. I think I will plant onion and garlic as well. I have inherited 7 raised bed and have so far cleared 4 of them, so I have plenty of room. It will be nice to plant something rather than leave them empty over the winter.

Definitely garlic - not only does it look good to have something in the ground but they actually do best when overwintered.

If you have room, you could also think to the future and plant berry plants (raspberries, gooseberries, blackcurrants etc) and maybe think about rhubarb.

Hi John, thanks for the reply. Garlic sounds a good idea. I will have room for berry plants and rhubarb, in fact I have four rhubarb crowns waiting to go. But the non raised bed area where this and the berry plants are going won't be ready for a while. The allotment site I'm on was only set up last year, so part of the plot has not yet been dug over. So at the moment I'm concentrating on the raised beds. It will all get sorted, eventually!
