cabbage seedlings
« on: April 09, 2012, 18:26 »
I planted these about 3 weeks ago and they all sprouted - 2 per cell. now they have started to look funny. can the parrafin heater fumes be the cause? i have other seedlings doing well (peppers, leeks, celeriac, toms and sunflowers). Shall i bin them and start again just incase they have that damping disease?
Thanks
Linda

How do you mean "funny" can you describe them, or better still, post a photo?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

how often have you been watering them, as the soil to me looks very wet - which could be the problem!

That's not damping off, the stems would have collapsed.

Having said that, I'm not sure what it is!

oh dear - it could be i have been overdoing it! I was under the impression the other day that my watering wasnt going right through so i gave them a good watering - i am gald you dont think its dampening disease.... So shall i just start again or if i leave them will they have a chance?

Thanks very much - i have tried growing veggies for about 3 years and find this time (sowing seeds ) very frustrating. 1 Cucumber out of a pack grew and 0 cape gooseberries! No wonder people buy them already grown at the garden centres!

i think your problem might be overwater/drowning them - leave trhem for a few day for the soil to dry out, they may pick up ;). and i think might be why you only got one cucumber and the cape gooseberries might have be down to a bad batch of seeds.

From now on i would suggest once planted the seeds water heavily  - then leave them - until it starts to dry out or seeds appear.

thankyou all - I have learnt a lot. I am impatient when I sow seeds and think that watering them makes them grow quicker... so from now on, just the once and wait. I will not get the hairdryer out (haha)
Does Burnt mean overwatering?

Does Burnt mean overwatering?

burnt/scorched means that the sun has cought the leaves/ or it could also mean that they have been nipped by the frost. however seen as yours where in the heated greenhouse i would say that the glass must have acted as a sort of magnifying glass (resulting in the leaves being scorched).

so i think the verdict on them is that the sun has scorched them - they should be fine though as it was only the tips and more leaves will follow. but i also think the are sulking due to overwatering!

Hi Crazypeanut (Nice name )
I wouldn't give up on sowing seeds,I've never grown anything at all before this year and believe me you couldn't know less than I do.
I've planted all sorts and everything has grown fine :)
I read the seed packet and asked a few questions from the knowledgeable people on here and I put everything on the window sill.
Bingo! they all came up just like they should.
It's better to burn out than to fade away !!     ;)

The compost does look a little too wet, but that is scorch (aka burnt) and that's something different.  Can be extremes of cold or heat that does it but cabbages are pretty hardy, so I would go with heat scorch.  Mine are in an unheated greenhouse and have germinated and grown on in there with no issues over the last couple of weeks.  If there are water droplets on the leaves, they can magnify the sun as can the glass of a greenhouse.

The badly damaged ones aren't really worth saving.  I would pull them out and re-sow  :)

Watering from underneath is safest for seedlings --- I always manage to knock them over otherwise
