I planted my cabbage seeds (greyhound) in my conservatory in Feb. I have since transplanted to modules and thinned to the best plants which are about 2-3 inches tall. But they don't seem to be growing much further, do I need to plant them on to bigger pots to help them grow and how big should they be before I plant outside?
My first attempt so any help gratefully received.

Glad you've done that as they are not really 3 inches at all, are they. :wink:
Slow growth in winter, normal. They are probably warm now in conservatory, harden off.

I put mine in 3" pots in my unheated and draughty greenhouse and they have romped away. (Well they're still in the greenhouse obviously)

It's very difficult to get an idea of scale, without a point of reference.
Is that a half seed tray, or a full size one?
They don't look unhealthy. I think all that's required is a bit of patience.

I stand corrected, if that's a full tray, they are thereabouts 3 inches. 8)

It is a full tray, the conservatory appears to range in temperature from about 10 - 45 degrees so would they be better outside now to keep growing or should I keep them in until they are big enough for planting out, and how big should they be?

At this stage I would be putting them into 3" pots in a cold greenhouse for a while, then hardening them off & planting out.
Have you anywhere that does not go up to 45 degrees? - this is way too hot for brassicas. (And most plants!).

My greyhound cabbage have been planted out for around a month now (can't remember exact date - got it written down somewhere lol) and they're thriving :D
They're under a net frame, and i just fleece if there's going to be snow or a frost.

Okay - I can transplant them to 3 inch pots but I may just have to take the plunge and put them outside in another week or so. I have no greenhouse and the conservatory is south facing which is why it gets so hot. I could put them outside in a large propagator for a while. What do you think?

My smaller summer cabbage are hardening off as we speak, they had the hails, the heavy showers and they are fine. 8)

hmm, maybe its time I hardened off my brassicas, they are about 6-8 inches tall and far more mature than these and in the same sized cells! but the bed isn't ready for them yet, too wet still. was hoping to wait til may.

If roots are out the cells, pot them on and put outside somewhere a bit sheltered or plant up in a cool open netted cold frame to harden off, by the time their place is ready.

OB, I would'nt bother with the 3 inch pots. You look to have them growing in 15 cell tray inserts, these are not much different to a 3 inch pot. Just let them get a bit bigger then start to harden them off

Except for most pots are usually deeper. :)

I think all that's required is a bit of patience.
To be honest this is what we all need at this time of year. The days are getting lighter and we have had a long dark winter and we are all raring to go.
I sowed a few things too early this year in my haste next year I will hang back for a few extra weeks.
I was saying to an old timer at our site last week that my Onion sets are not showing yet and he quite correctly said 'plants grow for themselves not for you, they will grow when THEY are ready'.
