Chrysanthemum bugs
« on: November 14, 2018, 10:28 »
Have grown late chrysanthemums for a few years. New plants each year. Put into greenhouse as tomatoes are taken out and before first frosts.
For the first time this year they have been affected by small black bugs, about 1/10 size of black fly. Legs not visible to naked eye. Also have some larger white bogs, about twice as big living with them. Are on flowers and stems. Normal insecticides have not made any impression and they re too "buggy" to bring indoors.

Binned the lot this morning as I didn't want them to overwinter.

Any ideas as to what these are and any method of control.
Am in East Anglia and had a very hot summer with infestation of white fly on brassicas.
Thanks for any replies.

There are quite a lot of invertebrate little demons that can live in or on your plants, and of course they do have their own little bugs as well.   Did you grow them from cuttings.  Sometimes the bugs will lay their eggs into the stems and leaves, and be invisible to the eye.
The best way to deal with them is to put nematodes in your greenhouse.  But as you have now disposed of the plants,  it may be a good plan to use them anyway.  This will ensure that your greenhouse has no nasty critters lurking around.
Good luck,  Mrs Bouquet
