Title: Contorted white currant branches.
Post by: Kleftiwallah on January 14, 2014, 13:58
Last year my whitecurrant bush gave a good yeald but the branches were all hugging the ground and were contorted, Is this normal (sorry I don't know the variety).

Cheers,  Tony.

I don't know for sure, but if the bush had never been like that before I might suspect herbicide damage or a virus?

No, you have me puzzled too. Been churning it round in my brain, but not come up with anything. I have white currants, as well as pink and red and I can't tell which bush is which without getting close enough to see the label. So I don't think that white currants should be noticeably different.
How are the branches contorted, like a twisted hazel?

The only other thing I would add, is that all the pruning guides tell you to prune out branches that lie along,or droop down to, the floor.  So it sounds as if it is common for them to do that, although if I read correctly, all the branches on yours are doing that?

Thanks for all your informative answers and suggestions.  (Not curly wurly like twisted hazel) and never been touched by chemicals of any sort.  I pruned it back hard in the late autumn, I'll monitor it growing and keep you up to date.  Thanks once more.

Cheers,   Tony.
