Broken tomato stem
« on: May 09, 2011, 22:42 »
Accidentally broke the very top of one of my red alert bush tomatoes - the top of the leading stem which was unfurling a lot of new growth. The plant is about 2 feet and been in final position for about 3 weeks. Will it recover and still grow full height or should I pull it and pop in one of my spares?  We r v v short of space so I don't want to risk a reduced crop!

Thx

Sometimes if I accidentally break the top off one of my tomatoes, I let the side shoot on the next bit down grow instead.

One year Brian decided to 'help' me by taking the side shoots off all my Gardeners Delight, unfortunately, he couldn't differentiate between 'side' and 'top'

But I still got quite a few toms from them!

Cucumbers want to die. Toms want to live. There's little that will kill them short of blight or being ripped out. The broken stem only means more side growth will pop out and more flowers. It'll look a bit odd but shouldn't affect productivity.

If you've still got it, pop the broken bit in a pot of compost. It should root and give you a new plant. Do the same thing with side shoots of cordon toms.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

As it's a bush variety you should be fine.
You will probably get a slightly bushier plant thats all.

I had a spare tom plant that had got too leggy in a small pot and i cut it from 24" to 4" and was heading for the compost heap when i spied a spare large pot of compost and thought 'i wonder if'.
It grew back to 48" high and fruited well. :)
As said before tomato plants really want to live !
