Anyone ever built a hot box ?  any good designs or advice ?

I assume you are talking about hot-frames used in the kitchen gardens to grow melons/cucumbers etc or to bring plants on earlier than if planted out in open ground. In my fave book (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Head-Gardeners-Toby-Musgrave/dp/1845132831) there are a number of references to hot frames.

It would seem the Victorians used a number of materials to fuel the frame including the obvious horse manure. They used damp leaves to control the initial surge of heat. A single filling could last for months. I tried this by filling my compost bin (1mx1mx1m) with wood chippings donated by local tree surgeon, much initial heat but then after I have moved it around, the heat seemed to reduce significantly. Monitoring still underway....

Any help?
